The 2023 National Sports Collectors Convention (NSCC) in Rosemont, Illinois was a success. I saw plenty of friends from the wacky world of collectors and I was able to add some great cards to the collection.
This post is dedicated to one of those cards.
The T206 Ty Cobb Green Portrait has been at the top of my want list for at least a year. A card like this would have been out of reach some time ago, so I am incredibly humbled by the opportunity to own one.
I found it on Thursday while walking the floor with my friend Eric. We had visited the booth the day before but I somehow missed it the first time. It is a bit cliche but I knew it would be mine as soon as I saw it. I flipped it over and saw the price tag and that confirmed that I was not leaving without it.
I gave it a 30-45 second scan and was excited. I handed it to Eric and within seconds he said, “I think this is the one for you.” It is good to have friends who know your taste and style. Before I could negotiate or work it the price down, the gentlemen shaved some off the top. Even better!
I promptly paid the man and we talked bout his Alejandro Oms painting by the hobby artist Graig Kreindler. My friend Andrew happened to walk up at this time and I was pleased to see him. He has known about my search for a green Cobb and he gave it a thumbs up by saying, “perfect color and registration.” If you know Andrew, that is the ultimate praise a card can receive.
Having two good friends experience this with me was one of the many highlights of the show.
The card was in an older SGC holder and the card was a little loose so I decided to hand it over to SGC for their re-holder service. I had it back in my hands within 3 hours. What a service!
This now gets me to 80% done on playing days cards of the original 1936 Baseball Hall of Fame class. That big behemoth that swatted 714 homers is the last one on the list. I hope to post about him soon.
Hope you are enjoying the collecting journey.
