Imagine you are at a baseball game. The score is 0-0 in the 5th inning and both offenses seem asleep. The leadoff hitter rips a double down the line for the first extra base hit of the day. Now are we talking! Something might happen here.
In today’s game, the next hitter is going to be swinging away. The numbers guys say it’s the best move. The manager doesn’t want to sacrifice an out. But the game I described is in 1909, not 2023. The next hitter is Eddie Collins, and Eddie is about to drop a bunt, and everyone knows it. That is why I love Eddie Collins.
Eddie Collins had 512 sacrifice hits in his career. He put up 120 more than second place Jake Daubert. Eddie knew the value of manufacturing runs and that is why he won 6 World Series rings and is in the Hall of Fame.
I recently acquired this incredible example of Eddie’s E90-1 baseball card in an SGC 1 holder. The green, the smile, the hat, the man. Look at this thing! I am incredibly happy to own this example. Please go add an Eddie Collins card to your collection, he’s one of the best!
